The head (kashira) is carved from a block of wood, with the workings built inside, then the face is attached and all is covered with gofun and the hair applied. Although the inner workings are in rough condition, it was made with mobile eyes, eyebrows and mouth that still work through a series of toggles and strings on the neck...

A smattering of goma ash surrounds but is almost worn from the top of this ancient Bizen footed bowl which had been used as a Kensui spent water jar for the Japanese Tea ceremony. A pale gray is visible below the surface, as if looking through the outer red. The bowl is heavily worn outside from much handling, and was likely used on a daily basis. Likely Momoyama period, I have not seen another like it. Judging by the shape it is possibly a priests begging bowl, although unusual with a foot...

A tiny mingei image of the god of fortune Hotei carved from what appears to my untrained eye to be bone, possibly Stag-horn. He squats, grinning up at the sky, his ubiquitous sack voluminous behind. Through the back and down through the bottom is bored a hole for the string. The figure is 1-1/2 inches (4 cm) tall and likely dates from the 19th century (Late Edo to Meiji). These are not modern reproductions, but genuine antique Japanese Netsuke coming from Kyoto.

Three positive molds used in the casting of bronze Buddhist images. The pieces would be used to create the breakable molds in which the images would be cast. They vary in height from 11 to 15 cm (4 to 6 inches) and date from the traditional manufacturing techniques lost long before the 2nd world war. They make for a very decorative group.
