A large and unusual Raku hand warmer (Shuro) in the shape of a monkey Charm (sarubobo) by representative Kyoto artist Kiyomizu Rokube IV (Rokuko, 1847-1920) dating circa 1920 enclosed in the original signed wooden box. The Sarubobo is a Mingei Monkey Charm from the Gifu area, here recreated in the low-fired Raku pottery tradition of Kyoto and seated on the original silk pillow. The walls of this unusual piece of Raku ware are more than 1/2 inch (1.5 cm) thick, making it quite sturdy...

Taisho style Image of the Heron Maiden named for her white dress and indications of winter. Here red tassels drape from within the white shawl adding a sense of youth to her mystery. Pigment on silk with unusual split silk border accentuating the Taisho image terminating in large ivory rollers. The scroll measures 25-1/2 x 92 inches (65 x 234 cm) and is in fine condition. What a pleasure it would be to drink from this haunting 17th century (Momoyama to early Edo) Karatsu Guinomi Sake cup with gold lacquer repairs. It is 2-1/2 inches (6.5 cm) dimeter, 1-3/4 inches (4.5 cm) tall. There are 2 tiny gold repairs gleaming softly on the rim like a yellow moon peering through clouds on a dark night. .
