The Kura - Japanese Art Treasures
As many may know we at The Kura have been heavily involved in the relief effort in Tohoku following the 2011, March 11 Earthquake and Tsunami which killed at least 26,000 people, and left hundreds of thousands homeless. During this last year we have neglected the website, and inconvenienced many with delays in service. Please know it was not without good reason, and your patience and understanding through this difficult time for Japan has been very much appreciated. A tiny mingei image of the god of fortune Hotei carved from what appears to my untrained eye to be bone, possibly Stag-horn. He squats, grinning up at the sky, his ubiquitous sack voluminous behind. Through the back and down through the bottom is bored a hole for the string. The figure is 1-1/2 inches (4 cm) tall and likely dates from the 19th century (Late Edo to Meiji). These are not modern reproductions, but genuine antique Japanese Netsuke coming from Kyoto.
