A tile used as a shiki-ita (base plate for a Kama-Buro) in the Tea Room from an estate we recently acquired. A Daruma wheel in center relief is surrounded by floral arabesques. The hand molded clay is roughly fired and minor chips only serve to enhance the sense of age. Perfect for the tea room setting and a good match to the Kozai Robuchi just listed. The piece is 31.5 x 31.5 x 4 cm (12-1/2 x 12-1/2 x 1-1/2 inches) and is in excellent condition.

A Robuchi hearth frame made from the old timbers (Kozai) of Genkoji Temple and bearing the yaki-in brand from the temple. Kozai tea utensils have long been highly appreciated in Japan, adding a sense of antiquity and Wabi-Sabi to the tea gathering, and crating a bridge between the temple and the tea room. The temple may have several made to give as return gifts to parishioners who have donated to the temples rebuilding...

A rare bronze ring in the shape of a monkey for use in the Japanese tea ceremony wrapped in a custom made silk Shifuku pouch enclosed in a period kiri-wood box. The creature is well defined, body covered in a combed mass of hair, his ears and face left smooth. He arches back in a pose, arms and legs wrapped around the lid implied; an insidious cry echoing from his open mouth. The piece is likely 19th century, and measures roughly 2-1/2 inches (6 cm) diameter, 2 inches (5 cm) tall...

A superb Black Oribe Chawan wrapped in a purple silk bag and enclosed in an antique kiri-wood box bearing two ancient labels. Turned and pinched upward, the mouth is slightly closed to trap the aroma of the tea and give the bowl a wide strong base, spiraling finger marks leading up to the rim. About the base the sides have been slashed away, allowing purchase for the hands...

A spectacular ancient Mizusashi enclosed in an Edo period wiped on lacquer Kiri-wood box labeled Ko-Korai Mizusashi (Kiseto). The addition of Kiseto in the box title indicates that previous owner was also not certain of its origins. There is much loss to the glass glaze inspiring a great sense of antiquity. Although it is labeled Korai (indicating it to be Korean), I believe it to be Annan-yaki, 13th to 14th century, from Vietnam...

Bold maki-e designs in gold cover the red and black lacquered surface of this oribe ceramic bowl in the rare style known as Toyoraku dating from the later Edo period. The overall design is quite powerful, with a geometric of gold and silver lines containing various patterns of waves, mesh, nets and crosshatches punctuated by three dials depicting natural scenes in gold...

A spectacular Shishi (Lion) shaped incense burner with peony flower top dating from the late 19th to the opening of the 20th century signed beneath in a cartouche by the artist. This is one of the most expressive I have seen in this genre. The fierce little portly creature sits slightly back on his haunches, glaring up with a growl as if ready to jump...

A deep Tsutsu Chawan of pale millet glaze tinged with silver dating from the Meiji period (19th century) and enclosed in a much worn kiri-wood box. An impressed seal beside the foot reads Raku followed by a second illegible character. It is made of very light, low fired Raku clay. The bowl is 4 inches (10.5 cm) diameter, 4-1/4 inches (11 cm) tall and in excellent condition. Choice pieces from a collection of unusual tea accoutrements recently acquired.

The glaze cleanly crawls away forming puddles of white on the scarred clay of this anonymous Mimitsuki Shino vase decorated with fern fronds in bold iron dating from the 19th century. The base is roughly torn and pinched, the sides gashed away with swift strokes creating a powerful presence. It is just over 10 inches (26 cm) tall and in fine condition, color absorbed over the last century attesting to age and use...

A haunting crackled glaze of pale yellow and cream with clouds of gray covers the faceted sides of this exquisite antique Mentori Chawan of light soft clay. Inside it is filled with color from years of use. The bowl glows in the dim candle light of the tea room, like the spirit of some past tea master kneeling beside the kama. A stamp beneath appears to read Mukashi (Long Past), but is partly obscured by glaze which makes it difficult to be sure...
