An exquisite vase of dark purple-tinged shakudo by preeminent Japanese metalworker Nakagawa Joeki enclosed in the original signed wooden box. They say a true artist can be measured in the simplest of forms, and this is perfectly created with a cut twig on one side, the nodules from the base of the bamboo visible below where it curved out from the forest floor. A hand formed deep basin covered with applied silver, gold, shakudo and other metals; dragonflies soar under silver clouds, the sides deeply scored below like gusts of Autumn rain. The vase, by Arita Toshiaki, is signed below and enclosed in the original signed wooden box. It is 8-1/2 inches (22 cm) tall, 7-1/2 inches (19 cm) square and in excellent condition. This piece was displayed at the 1955 Nitten National Exhibition and is published on page 496 of the Nitten-shi (catalog number 18).
