As many may know we at The Kura have been heavily
involved in the relief effort in Tohoku following the
2011, March 11 Earthquake and Tsunami which killed at
least 26,000 people, and left hundreds of thousands
homeless. During this last year we have neglected the
website, and inconvenienced many with delays in service.
Please know it was not without good reason, and your patience
and understanding through this difficult time for Japan
has been very much appreciated. For more on our efforts
please see http://www.idrojapan.org
After this first year anniversary we are now looking forward
to getting back to the business of collection building, and
look forward to working with you again in 2012
Sincerely: Robert Mangold

It bears a Yaki-in stamp by the maker on the base of the head@and neck reading Awa Ningyoko The head (kashira) is carved from a b ...click for details

This one belongs in a museum! A large and fantastic Bunraku Puppet head made by Kondo Tenguben bearing his Yaki-in stamp beneath the neck and dated Showa 13 (1938). It is in very fine condition. Via an ingenious system of toggles on the neck the eyes move up and down or close, the eyebrows move up and down and of course the head moves on the neck. The head (kashira) is carved from a block of wood, with the workings built inside, then the face is attached and all is covered with gofun and the ...click for details
