A snail crawls slowly toward the scrawling gold lines of this tea room scroll by Imai Keiju enclosed in the original signed wooden box. It is performed with ink and gold on paper in a crushed paper border with bamboo rollers befitting the humble confines of the tea room. The scroll is 18-1/2 by 43-1/2 inches (46.5 x 110 cm) and is in fine condition. Imai Keiju (1891-1967) was born and lived his life in Kansai, cultural heart of Japan. Pitted black drapes over the fine orange-peal texture of this Kuro-Raku Chawan by Higaki Soraku I (d. 1983) enclosed in the original wooden box endorsed within. The bowl is 5 inches (13 cm) diameter, 3-1/2 inches (8 cm) tall and in excellent condition. A beautifully formed bowl. Soraku took over the Katsura Kiln, and built it in its current form in 1955 making the decision at that time to concentrate almost uniquely upon tea ceremony wares along with his wife Sohaku. Perhaps an artist struggling with the realities of his time, Red Shinto architecture lies beyond the Goddess of mercy Kanon, supplanted by a roaring tiger and hard industrial forms, the two panel image is signed Sankian and dated 1966. The Tiger called post war Japan struggled with its own identity, losing much of its traditional heritage as it rose to a status of world economic power from the 1950s-1980s.. The screen measures 5 feet by 64 inches (153 x 163 cm) and is in fine condition.

A red Raku Chawan inscribed with the Ichigyosho Tea phrase Seifu hakki yoku ni shozu by Zen Priest Kutsu Deiryu enclosed in a wooden box. The bowl is 4-1/2 inches (11.5 cm) diameter and in fine condition. Kutsu Deiryu (1895-1954) was born into a military family, and was raised from an early age in the strict environment until being diagnosed with Tuberculosis. A Shino glazed bowl inscribed with the characters Jutoku by Zen Buddhist Priest Yamada Mumon enclosed in the original cedar box signed by the potter and made in 1974 for the 500th anniversary of the completion of Tokuju-Ji Temple. The bowl is roughly 5 inches (12 cm) diameter, 3-1/2 inches (8.5 cm) tall and in fine condition. A fine large silver rimmed cloisonn vase decorated with winter flowers, prunus, peony and Chrysanthemum over a rich Maccha green tea base. The vase stands 12 inches (30 cm) tall and is in fine condition but for one slight vertical fracture above the center plum branch (see photos). The Jungin (pure silver) grade stamp is visible on the base.

Peacock feathers are etched into the black lacquer of this writing box signed Shoho and enclosed in the original signed wooden box. The work is so complex, and yet has such a natural, sublime feel. It is unused, containg the original suiteki water dropper and ink stone. The box is 19 x 25 x 4 cm (7-1/2 x 10 x 2 inches) and is in excellent condition.
