A souring image of Kannon rising on swirling clouds above the earth, pouring out a bottle from one hand, the other grasping a lotus blossom. The robes swirl about in an amazing array of carving technique. It is signed on the base Ryuichi-saku and stands over 16 inches (41 cm) tall. There are no chips or cracks and it is in fine condition.

Streaks of blue-green wash in waves down the three sides of this Jomon-inspired pottery vase dating from the immediate post-war era marked on the base simply “Ka”. It is an excellent example of mid-century Japanese pottery, from a time when the country was attempting to recover from the destruction of the second World War and rediscover it’s roots. A piece bearing this same stamp is held in the collection of the Morikami Museum.

A bronze image of three firemen battling a blaze titled Bosai (Extinguishing the Flames) by Hanada Kazuo enclosed in the original signed wooden box. This is a small version of the wildly popular wooden carving submitted by him in 1956 to the Nitten national exhibition. It is 24 cm tall and in fine condition, weighing almost 4 kg (8.5 lbs).

Fire burns deep in the heart of this mirror black dish by Ichigo Iccho enclosed in the original signed wooden box. It is 42.5 cm (17 inches) diameter, 6.5 cm (2-1/2 inches) tall and in fine overall condition, with very minor marks from handling. Ichigo Iccho (1898-1991) was a lacquer artist from the Wajima area of Ishikawa prefecture, and was exhibited with the Nitten national exhibition among others.

The screen is performed with heavy pigment on silk, in a transitional style typical of the early post war era where the theme remains traditional yet the execution is changing stylistically to what would become Nihonga after the mid 50s. It is possibly “Chatei Akibi” (Autumn Tea Garden), exhibited 5th Nitten, 1949. The image, style and execution match the era, but there are no photographic records with which to compare. Each panel is 174 x 90 cm (68-1/2 inches x 3 feet)...

A dramatic pair of large trays decorated with silver characters for sun and moon on dynamic black and red surfaces. The silver has darkened with age, striking against the smooth lacquer. A trumpeting rim caps this baluster form vase by Miyagawa Kozan decorated with yellow flowers in overglaze enamel on underglaze cobalt decoration. It is 10 inches (25 cm) tall, 7-1/2 inches (19 cm) diameter and in fine condition. There is no box. Dozens of extremely fine and colorful feathers decorate this box and tray dating from the first half of the 20th century. The box is 4-1/2 x 5-1/2 x 2 inches (11.5 x 14 5 cm). The tray is 7-1/2 x 6-1/2 inches (19.5 x 16 cm). Excepting very minor wear on the bottom of the box and one miniscule flaw in the lacquer (see last photo) they are in decidedly fine condition.
