A very perplexed looking Daruma figure by Kutsu Deiryu, ink on paper, fully remounted in a dark brown rough silk border with wood rollers. The scroll is 16 x 74 inches (41 x 189 cm) and in fine condition. Kutsu Deiryu, 1895-1954. Deiryu was born into a military family, and was raised from an early age in the strict environment until being diagnosed with Tuberculosis. He was sent then to serve at a nearby temple but was refused as Buddhism was still recovering and many temples were quite poor. ...click for details

It is the most amazing work of woven textile we have ever owned, and would certainly have been tens of thousands of dollars new. Not once does the pattern repeat itself. Here are three individual hand-made Kimono Obi (sashes), one maru-obi, the other two in the Nagoya-obi style of pre-folding,. Each is enclosed in a unique wooden box signed within by the maker. Not our usual forte, but this seemed more than your average used kimono. The maru-obi is of glistening gold thread decorated with abstact patterns. A fine large silver rimmed cloisonné vase decorated with winter flowers, prunus, peony and Chrysanthemum over a rich Maccha green tea base. The vase stands 12 inches (30 cm) tall and is in fine condition but for one slight vertical fracture above the center plum branch (see photos). The Jungin (pure silver) grade stamp is visible on the base.

Peacock feathers are etched into the black lacquer of this writing box signed Shoho and enclosed in the original signed wooden box. The work is so complex, and yet has such a natural, sublime feel. It is unused, containg the original suiteki water dropper and ink stone. The box is 19 x 25 x 4 cm (7-1/2 x 10 x 2 inches) and is in excellent condition.

A two panel screen decorated made from panels of woven silk taken from an obi. According to the former owner, their grandmother had the screen made from her wedding kimono obi of Nishijin woven silk, worn only once. It is patterned with books open to palace garden settings, bridges and florals on white ground. Clouds of cherry blossoms float over roaring waves on this kara-mono Shippo cloisonné work by Hwan Jin Shu (Huang Jing Ren in pinyin) enclosed in the original signed wooden box. Lavender scales separate the lid from the body, with a green handle in graffitio wire work. Kara mono Shippo is the enamel style originating in China, which was favored by the early tea masters. Early 20th century Kaki otoshi and carved pottery vase with a dragon soaring through clouds, reaching for the elusive pearl of Buddhist wisdom, signed on the base with a kiln mark from the southern Island Kingdom of Ryukyu (Okinawa). It is 8-1/2 inches (22 cm) tall, 8 inches (20 cm) diameter and in fine condition. This is from a collection of scholar items we are currently offering from the estate of a Kyoto family involved in literati and art movements from the later Edo period on.

Fuji by Fukuda Kodojin Dated 1925 , ink on paper in a mustard silk border with pale piping in the Mincho style popular among literati artists and featuring bone rollers. The scroll is 16-1/2 by 75 inches (42 x 191 cm) and is in fine condition but for some minor wrinkles. It comes enclosed in an old wooden box. Mt.
