A large cylinder taken from the base of bamboo carved with three frogs and signed Amanohashi Shujin Usho-saku and dated Showa 8 (1933), enclosed in a period wooden box. A hardworking squirrel clutches a walnut as he tucks away another winter meal perched atop a stone from which grow mushrooms. It is beautifully carved from hardwood, signed on the base Tengeki (?), likely dating from the immediate pre-war or post-war period. It is 19 x 9 x 21-1/2 inches (48 x 23 x 55 cm) and is in overall very good condition. A small chip or crack has formed in the tip of the tail, visible from the top only (see close-up photo).

Raised Cloisonné flowers decorate the lid of this brass Suzuri Bako Writing box made by the Ando Studio and enclosed in a silk lined custom wood box. Inside is lacquered black, and contains the never used ink-grinding stone (Suzuri) as well as a suiteki of the same brass and cloisonne design set into a wooden tray with rests built in for brushes. It bears the Ando mark on the base and is in fine condition, measuring 10 x 7 inches (18 x 26 cm).
