Robert has been working with disaster relief group IDRO Japan in the earthquake affected areas of Kumamoto, and this has caused some delays in listing, messaging and shipping. Brass and Shakudo form a dragonfly lighting upon one of three art-deco inspired leaves “floating” on a slab of fine kiri-wood making up this okimono signed on the base Takasaki Hiromasa and enclosed in the original signed wooden box dating likely from the 1930s. It is 36.5 x 30.5 x 2.5 cm (14-1/2 x 12 x 1 inches) and is in excellent condition.

Egrets in flight decorate the art-deco influenced shape of this faceted hanging vase by Nakamura Suiko enclosed in the original signed wooden box. According to the inside of the box, this was one of three made for submission to the 5th Nihon Bijutsu Tenrankai (Nitten, 1949). An entry in the catalog for that year states that Nakamura Suiko of Ishikawa prefecture exhibited a “Tri faceted Porcelain Hanging Vase Decorated with Egrets”...

The lotus sutra is written out in perfect characters by the Zen Nun Murase Myodo. The ink on paper Sutra is mounted in patterned lavender with Kinran highlights extended in green silk and ends with black lacquered wooden rollers. It is 26 x 52 inches (66.5 x 132 cm) and comes enclosed in a kiri wood box. There are a few faint scattered spots (see photos)...

A chawan tea bowl by Zen priest Kajitani Sonin of Sokokuji Temple in Kyoto enclosed in the original signed wooden box. It is 5-1/2 inches (14 cm) diameter and in excellent condition. The box is stamped with the Yaki-in (brand) of Sokokuji Temple. For a nearly identical piece see “Zenmi, A Taste of Zen” (2012) Morikami Museum publication from the Riva Lee Asbell collection, p. 101.

An incense case made by Mashimizu Zoroku IV and decorated by Murakami Jikai, head Priest of Rokuonji in Kyoto (Known for the gold pavilion called locally Kinkakuji), enclosed in the original wooden box dating from 1987. It is 2-1/2 inches (6.5 cm) diameter and in fine condition.
Murakami Jikai was born in 1902 in Aichi Prefecture and received ordination in 1916 at Rokuon-ji (better known as the Golden Pavilion)...

A pair of Futaoki lid rests for use ing the Japanese Tea Ceremony decorated with the Kao signature in red of Kasumi Bunsho enclosed in the original signed wooden box. A set of four Tokonoma alcove doors mounted with silk paintings featuring a flight of birds before the waxing moon. They are signed Shunka-saku followed by a Hashira style stamp. Each door is roughly 29 x 47 cm (inches). The doors are mounted in black lacquer with excellent quality hand-forged bronze handles. The character “Hiraku” Open (or to Open) in bold scratchy strokes by the infamous nun Murase Myodo. Open you mind, open the path to enlightenment, the path is open to all, but like this calligraphy work is not easy, it is dry and thorny and the gate must be passed.
