Robert has been working with disaster relief group IDRO Japan in the earthquake affected areas of Kumamoto, and this has caused some delays in listing, messaging and shipping. A dragon rides in a swirl of movement atop this silver and damascened Koro incense burner by Chosa Yoshiyuki. The sides are decorated with images of plum and pine. The bottom is signed Yoshi-saku, and bears the stamp 900 delineating the silver content. It is 5-1/2 inches (14 cm) tall, 3-1/2 inches (9 cm) diameter and in fine condition, enclosed in a period heavy kiri-wood box.

An important work in the oeuvre of 20th century avant-garde oil painter Nakamura Yoshitane, his first exhibited work at the 1938 Dokuritsu Tenrankai (Independent Painters Exhibition) titled Canna and Cypress retaining the original gilt frame and published in Nakamura Yoshitane Gendai no Ningen Fukei (page 81). A 1989 Oil by Nakamura Yoshitatne exhibited at the Kyoten (Kyoto Bijutsu Tenrankai) and retaining the exhibition label titled Yukibuki Yamamura (Keihoku) (A Snow Covered Village in Northern Kyoto). It is 91 x 72.5 cm (3 feet by 28-1/2 inches), oil on canvas stretched over a wooden frame. Overall excellent condition. This is accompanied by a book on the artist.

Shamo Chicks prance about, fluffing up their feathers and picking for fallen tidbits among the days catch of beans and fresh bamboo root. The pigment on silk scene is stamped in the right corner with a chop that appears to read Seiryu. It is 82-1/2 x 67-1/2 inches (209 x 171.5 cm) and is in overall fine condition, with faint scattered foxing and a spot of insect damage to the upper green border near the center (see close-up photo). It dates from the Taisho to early Showa eras, 1920 -1935.

The cock stretches his neck in haughty defiance as he struts across the gold panels of this painted screen dated Mid Autumn 1934 and signed Heijo Nushi Shigeo (Yamashita Shigeo). Pastel rooftops march among the green foliage on this iconic mid-century painting by Miwa Chosei in the original frame bearing the artists “Tomo Seal” on back and in a box from Takashimaya Department Store dating from the 1950s titled Ieshima no Ienami (Rows of houses on Ieshima). A superb elephant shaped incense burner by Miyanaga Tozan enclosed in the original signed wooden box titled Seiji Zo Koro. Extreme clarity in the fine details, I will let the photos speak for themselves. It is 6 x 4 x 6 inches (15 x 10 x 15 cm) and in excellent condition. It comes with a pamphlet dated Showa 16 (1941) the last year of the artists life.

A screen featuring the gate at Hikone Castle by Honjo Toen exhibited at the 1927 Teiten (mod. Nitten) National Exhibition Pigment on silk in a brocade border with original red lacquered wooden frame and cloth backing. It is in overall fine condition. Some chips in the lacquer frame have been filled, and some water marks are present in the center and upper left of the screen. It is 187 x 140 cm (73-1/2 x 55 inches).

A four stage lacquer Kogo incense case in austere black decorated with the 16 petal Imperial chrysanthemum and enclosed in the original wooden box signed Heian Manju-zo. Inside is superb Nashiji ground. It is 6.5 x 6 x 9 cm (roughly 2-1/2 square by 3-1/2 inches tall). This was made by Uesugi Manju and given as a gift to those who attended the ceremony of the first harvest held by the current emperor of Japan, the Heisei Emperor, in 1988. Brass and Shakudo form a dragonfly lighting upon one of three art-deco inspired leaves “floating” on a slab of fine kiri-wood making up this okimono signed on the base Takasaki Hiromasa and enclosed in the original signed wooden box dating likely from the 1930s. Egrets in flight decorate the art-deco influenced shape of this faceted hanging vase by Nakamura Suiko enclosed in the original signed wooden box. According to the inside of the box, this was one of three made for submission to the 5th Nihon Bijutsu Tenrankai (Nitten, 1949). The lotus sutra is written out in perfect characters by the Zen Nun Murase Myodo. The ink on paper Sutra is mounted in patterned lavender with Kinran highlights extended in green silk and ends with black lacquered wooden rollers. It is 26 x 52 inches (66.5 x 132 cm) and comes enclosed in a kiri wood box. There are a few faint scattered spots (see photos).
