The Kura - Japanese Art Treasures
Thank you to everyone for thier patience during the last few months since the Kumamoto Earthquake. Robert has been working with disaster relief group IDRO Japan in the earthquake affected areas of Kumamoto, and this has caused some delays in lisitng, messaging and shipping. Now back in the gallery for the next month, and actively seeking new stock, we do anticipate more disaster relief work after the rain season has ended in mid July. An unusual form by Kiyomizu Rokubei enclosed in the original signed wooden box titled “Nishikizoku Kabin” similar in form to the work exhibited at the Nitten in 1938, but likely pre-dating that by a few years. The vase is 16 inches (41 cm) tall, 8-1/2 inches (22 cm) diameter and is in fine condition, and includes a rosewood base.

An unusual basket shaped ceramic vessel surmounted by a frog by Ito Tozan enclosed in the original signed wooden box. It is roughly 9 inches (23 cm) diameter, 5 inches (13 cm) tall and in excellent condition.
Ito Tozan I (1846-1920) began as a painter in the Maruyama school studying under Koizumi Togaku. In 1862 he became a pupil of Kameya Kyokutei, as well as studying under Takahashi Dohachi III and Kanzan Denshichi (who made the dishes for the imperial table)...

The lotus sutra is written out in perfect characters by the Zen Nun Murase Myodo. The ink on paper Sutra is mounted in patterned lavender with Kinran highlights extended in green silk and ends with black lacquered wooden rollers. It is 26 x 52 inches (66.5 x 132 cm) and comes enclosed in a kiri wood box. There are a few faint scattered spots (see photos)...

A chawan tea bowl by Zen priest Kajitani Sonin of Sokokuji Temple in Kyoto enclosed in the original signed wooden box. It is 5-1/2 inches (14 cm) diameter and in excellent condition. The box is stamped with the Yaki-in (brand) of Sokokuji Temple. An incense case made by Mashimizu Zoroku IV and decorated by Murakami Jikai, head Priest of Rokuonji in Kyoto (Known for the gold pavilion called locally Kinkakuji), enclosed in the original wooden box dating from 1987. It is 2-1/2 inches (6.5 cm) diameter and in fine condition.

An Enso circle containing the characters Cha, Setsugetsuka by Zen priest and famed calligrapher Kasumi Bunsho enclosed in the original signed wooden box dated 1977. It can be translated TEA, Snow, Moon Flowers, three of the beauties of nature to be enjoyed from the solitary confines of the tea room. A large bronze vase inlayed with a silver net over-layed by goldfish, upper and lower diapers of curling waves by Shuko enclosed in the original signed wooden box dated Showa 7 (1932). Inside the lid is a red label from the Tanaka Kiyogoro store in Tokyo Nipponbashi. It is titled Gin-ami Kabin, Gin Koshoku Kingyo Moyo (Silver Net Vase with Old Silver color Goldfish Design). It is roughly 11 inches (28 cm) tall, the same diameter and in excellent condition.

A set of ten plates made by Haku-un and decorated by Nanga artist Ueda Tangai enclosed in the original wooden box titled TangaiGa Kashizara (Sweets dishes decorated by Tangai). Each dish bears a unique seasonal floral motif. A set of four Tokonoma alcove doors mounted with silk paintings featuring a flight of birds before the waxing moon. They are signed Shunka-saku followed by a Hashira style stamp. A exquisite chisel of hand forged suminagashi steel signed Chiyoryu and a carving knife signed Akifusa enclosed in a signed wooden box . The Chisel has a hardwood handle carved with a dragon and signed Naritaka. The chisel is 25 inches (63 cm) long. The knife is 27 inches (68 cm) long and both are in excellent condition. These are used in the muneage ceremony (raising of the ridgepole) in traditional Japanese construction.
