An impressive image of a bunshichi (male warrior puppet) dressed in a stunning costume of gold brocade embellished with dragon and phoenix dials over a kiko field, and featuring movable arms, head and eyes. His head is made of wood covered with flesh-toned gofun (powdered shellfish) and has thick bristly hair tied in a topknot with gold and silver threads. A fine modern Akahada ceramic okimono in the form of a two tiered Pagoda in the original box signed by Onishi Rakusai (1911-present). Each of the three pieces in this sculpture is made of very fine white clay covered in pale green glaze, which gathers shadow-like in the grooves and accentuates the corners. The underside is stamped Akahada Rakusai and the piece likely dates from within the last 30 years. Assembled it stands 10-1/2 inches (26.5 cm) to the peak. I have spoken with the kiln rega ...click for details

A striking contemporary Chawan enclosed in the original box signed Hisashi (Kawai HIsashi), one in the line of the great Kawai Kanjiro. The gritty white clay has been deeply carved with swirling leaf like patterns. The inside of the unusual piece is smooth, and the entire body is covered in glassy green glaze, which has pooled deep and dark in the recesses. The deep bowl measures 5-1/4 inches (13.5 cm) in diameter, 3-1/2 inches (9cm) tall.

The villainous Tanuki from the legend Kachi-kachi Yama disguised as a Kama prepares to flee in this early 20th century Kyoto school watercolor and ink on silk painting signed Seiko. The story, reminiscent of the Western Little Red Riding Hood, is said to have its origins in the Muromachi period. According to the tale, a tanuki (raccoon like creature endowed with mystical powers) enters a home and devours the old mother, but is not able to escape as it is surprised by the return of the young so ...click for details

A very interesting set of 18 tiny wooden figures set into a wooden base and enclosed in a wooden box with glass front. The miniature scene is of a Daimyou Gyoretsu, or seasonal pilgrimage. The Daimyo or Feudal lord sits astride his horse, preceded by spear bearing Samurai who call upon other travelers to bow down while he passes. Behind march another group of soldiers and baggage carriers. Each unique figure stands just less than 2 inches (5 cm) tall. The inscription on the box reads Showa ...click for details

A simple light weight Ashigaru Do or foot soldiers armor of heavily lacquered hemp dating from the Momoyama period (16th century) complete with kote, suneate and jingasa. There are no markings of allegiance on either the Do or the Jingasa, perhaps a prudent move for a farmer/warrior in the ever changing political landscape of the warring states era, when powerful families that had ruled Japan for centuries could be toppled in a single battle, and Spies, assassination, patricide and all manner o ...click for details

An outstanding water color and ink image of Shoki on silk depicting the demon queller as he crushes a devil under his boot, sword in hand, signed Tanraku and enclosed in an older wooden box. The hard, concise black lines and unusual use of shading show a mixture of traditional and modern styles. Tanraku, whose real name is Hayashi Kintaro, was born in Kyoto in 1875 (where he would have been influenced by the then modern realism of the Shijo school), and apprenticed under Kano Tanbi before movi ...click for details

An early 20th century calligraphy work by Nakahara Nantenbo (Toju Zenchu, 1839-1925) framed in hardwood and mounted on gold flake reading Ko-taku-bo, meaning the Chamber of Light. Of course, Nantenbo was likely the most infamous Zen-shu priest of the 20th century; a man born a samurai, who relinquished the world to join the clergy after his mothers death, and subsequently was a driving force behind the restoration of faith and integrity in the decrepit political system that was Zen Buddhism at ...click for details
