An impressive Edo period (1615-1868) Oribe Wan-gata Chawan, the sandy clay covered in creamy crackly glaze, a dab of pitted green on one edge, and striking geometric designs burning through in iron. The bowl, which comes in an ancient cloth bag enclosed in an old wooden box, measures 5 inches (12.5 cm) in diameter, 3 inches (8 cm) to the rim. In this case, the pictures can say much more than I, and I will leave it at there is no damage.

A Buddhist image of the popular demi-god Fudomyo in ink and watercolor on paper by renowned Buddhist art expert Hayashiya Tanyo (1919-1999) enclosed in the original signed wooden box and dating from 25 to 40 years ago. With the manner and presence the painting exudes, it could be from 7 centuries ago. It is bordered in Ash colored cloth with beige extensions. There is a brownish water-stain along the roller, and some bubbling in the surface (see pictures). It measures 21-3/4 by 69-1/2 inches ...click for details

Featured here a tempestuous scene of furious waves and dark roiling clouds dominated by the crimson orb of the rising sun, seeming ready to purge the sky of its violence. Depicted in ink and mineral paints on silk, the unsigned painting is immediately bordered in patterned brocade, extended in rough beige silk and terminates in large bone rollers. It is very rare to find a painting of this genre depicted with such power, most are of much calmer seas; even if the waves are choppy one gets a fee ...click for details

Miniature pines march among moss-covered rocks across this kama-byobu (tearoom screen) depicted in a style reminiscent of the Rimpa School in watercolor on a crinkled silver foil ground. The scene is signed Juzan and dates from the first quarter of the 20th Century (late Meiji or Taisho period). The control shown by the artist in creating a scene with watercolors on a non-absorbent surface is superb, with the color pooling to create the stones, trunks and cones on the trees, thousands of sharp ...click for details

A late Edo or Meiji period (19th century) tall Oribe ichirinsashi vase of smooth clay covered in brown glaze with a dab of Oribe green at the mouth. The long vase is deeply striated and slightly squared off, with one side decorated with thick globs of glaze causing bubbling and a rougher texture. The base is blackened with age, and here and there stubborn grime accumulated over a century clings to the grooves in the surface. The base has been stamped by the artist or kiln. It stands 8-1/2 in ...click for details

Thick wrinkled iron-like glaze seems to fold and slide down the sides of this deep Tamba Chawan by Murakami Yoichi (1937-present) enclosed in the dramatically signed high quality original Kiri-wood box and named Fumyo inside the box. The control shown in the piece is phenomenal; multiple applications of extremely thick glaze building up and fired at a temperature just to the point that it begins to slide evenly down two sides, the third side creating a bulbous drip along the kodai (foot) that f ...click for details
