As many may know we at The Kura have been heavily involved in the relief effort in Tohoku following the 2011, March 11 Earthquake and Tsunami which killed at least 26,000 people, and left hundreds of thousands homeless. During this last year we have neglected the website, and inconvenienced many with delays in service. Please know it was not without good reason, and your patience and understanding through this difficult time for Japan has been very much appreciated. For more on our efforts please see http://www.idrojapan.org After this first year anniversary we are now looking forward to getting back to the business of collection building, and look forward to working with you again in 2012 Sincerely: Robert Mangold Owner, The Kura Director, International Disaster Relief Organization

An incredible hand painted Taisho period bijin scroll signed Hakuho; so lifelike it looks to be a photograph. An angelic, Kimono clad beauty pauses to gaze out the garden window. One arm resting on the sill, she tranquilly stares past the hanging lantern and bamboo close at hand, her beautiful almond eyes fixed on the distance, she appears to be looking not at the garden, but at her own world. A colorful comb decorates her full hair while a pendant dangles from a kanzashi above her ear. A ...click for details

A 12 inch 18th-19th Century image of a kimono clad Sumo wrestler hand carved from a single block of wood and covered in now almost nonexistent mineral paint. His black hair, tied in a traditional topknot, frames the squinty, round face; his hands hold on to the massive belly with an air of pride. Although there are many splits and cracks in the wood, they only add to the appeal of this ancient sculpture.

An extremely fine bronze Koro in the form of a mythical Kirin by Living National Treasure Katori Masahiko (1899-1988). Masahiko, a graduate of Tokyo National University of Art, went on to an illustrious career. Unlike his colleagues, he produced very limited numbers of his pieces, often only one. As this piece is not numbered, I believe it also is a one of a kind. It has a rich, green patina that lends age to the work, actually most likely no more than 30 years old. It is 8 inches (20cm) lo ...click for details
