As many may know we at The Kura have been heavily involved in the relief effort in Tohoku following the 2011, March 11 Earthquake and Tsunami which killed at least 26,000 people, and left hundreds of thousands homeless. During this last year we have neglected the website, and inconvenienced many with delays in service. Please know it was not without good reason, and your patience and understanding through this difficult time for Japan has been very much appreciated. For more on our efforts please see http://www.idrojapan.org After this first year anniversary we are now looking forward to getting back to the business of collection building, and look forward to working with you again in 2012 Sincerely: Robert Mangold Owner, The Kura Director, International Disaster Relief Organization

An haunting 17th century sumi-e image of a goose at twilight by Kano Toun (1624-1694) in the original Edo silver threaded brocade border patterned with clouds, upper and lower extensions of heavy coffee colored cloth ending in ivory rollers. The almost complete dominance of white seems to convey a passage through space, from clarity into obscurity, leaving the viewer with a slight sense of loss echoing in ones memory. Kano Toun, (born Masanobu, 3rd son of Goto Mitsuyori) first learned painting ...click for details

White doves coo from the branch of a darkened pine, their coquettish song startling deer browsing the cool forest shadows calling to alert their sensitivity. Trees are magnificently depicted in soft dark washes of ink and mottled masses of green moss pigment. The screen is one of a pair by early 20th century artist Kitamura Osa (b. 1880, artist names Gyokuryo/Kinho) dated Taisho Gannen (1912). The majestic cock heralds the rising of a bold red sun from the terrace of a mountain temple. A simple dark wash creates the shadowy railing, the red orb and brilliant plumage of the bird standing in sharp contrast and drawing the eye. An exquisite image of a snow laden mountain village signed Eisei and stamped Morofuji (Morofuji Eisei, b. 1902). A river flows quietly through the foreground of the scene loaded with fresh snow. So quiet one can almost feel the hush broken by the plop of snow falling from overloaded branches and the gurgle of the stream. It seems I was just there last week; this scene still visible in rural areas of Japan today. It is bordered in elaborate cloth of earthy tones of peach, lavender, beige and ...click for details

This beautifully carved bit of Mingei is taken from the base of a bamboo tree, just where the roots begin to branch out. Some of the rows of me (root-eyes) are visible in the shiny exposed bit below the curling lotus leaf stalk. The carving is all performed with an ara-bori flare, like the back of an old Noh mask, chisel marks forming the veins of the drying leaves. The back has been flattened to allow it to hang on a pillar, and there is a hole opened up for that. The mouth and interior hav ...click for details
