Travelers sporadically populate the riversides of this mountainous golden landscape screen dominated by one huge snow covered peak. Boats ply the dark blue waters, while horses frolic in the forest lower left. Is it the travelers from the tales of Ise we see walking through a copse of pine in the center? Late 17th or 18th century, the gold is spectacular. The scene is bordered with regal purple brocade separated from the scene by a strip of white silk, with a black lacquered wooden frame. A Sagi (Egret) stands alone on the side of this fine large porcelain vase by Miyagawa (Makuzu) Kozan I. The creature seems to fade mystically into the darkening pink blown on (fuki-e) cloud. Perhaps a pre-cursor to the ethereal qualities that were on the verge of Taisho art Just less than 11 inches (27 cm) tall and in perfect condition. It is signed on the base in a chattered ring Makuzu Kozan Saku. The name Kozan was granted by Prince Yasui-no-Miya in 1851 in honor of the tea ware produced ...click for details

No one artist has matched the depth of design and balance of shades that were created by Makuzu Kozan from his compound in Yokohama. This baluster form vase is another that proves this point. It is quite large by Japanese standards at 16 inches (41 cm) tall and in perfect condition. All about a roiling tree blanketed landscape fades off to mist and distance, like the world in a blue dream. Of course hand created, the precision with which the color has been applied, and the contrast in gradat ...click for details
