A gorgeous iron tea pot with both a bronze and iron lid signed on the side Oguro-an (the Oguro hermitage or studio) and enclosed in a wooden box signed Chusaburo. There are holes in the sides and handle intimating antiquity and deterioration, creating a worn and intimate feel for such a hard surface and bringing it into the wabi-sabi fold. The bronze lid is heavily mottled in color and the iron lid features a silver ring handle. The piece is 5-1/2 inches (14 cm) square, 10 inches (25 cm) tall ...click for details

A fine 17th-18th century Kutsugata E-Shino Chawan, the pitted white glaze decorated pell-mell with slashes of gray outside, and what intimates three tumbling balls of yarn within. Two excellent dark gold repairs glint on the inner rim, a testament to age and use equaling the dark color filling the perforated and crackled once white glaze. The large basin is roughly formed, the artists fingers dragging furrows into the sides and the thick shino glaze running in uneven drips both within and with ...click for details

What a fantastic expression worn by this Edo p. Seto Hand warmer (hibachi or properly Shuro/ Te-abure). The dark shiny Seto glaze suits well the beast portrayed. Coals would have been burned inside, heating the surrounding pottery walls, and the piece would have been placed on a step leading into the house for guests to warm their hands on or used within the house in a more formal room. It is 13 inches (33 cm) long and is in fine condition overall. It appears as if when potted the craftsman ...click for details

Crashing blue waves thrash under a faint red sun emerging from mornings mist on this antique scroll dated Taisho 11 (1923) enclosed in the original wooden box signed Kanzan. The silk canvas is bordered in copper brocade ending with large bone rollers. The Scroll is 26 by 85 inches (65 x 216 cm) and in good condition. It is likely the work of Tago Saichiro, a Nagano artist born in 1876 tutored under the watchful eye of one of the Meiji Greats, Shimomura Kanzan.

A humorous looking dragon twists up the paper canvas, eyes on the prize, a tama or Buddhist jewel underlying a dramatically written inscription. What is extraordinary is that the dragons scaled body is performed with a single stroke of the brush! Over this has been added a shadow for the back, and embellishment of the head. It is signed Fujiki Shuchokusai, and comes enclosed in the original signed and age darkened wooden box. Bordered with patterned green silk extended with beige and featuri ...click for details

Gold characters by important 20th century Zen Priest Yamada Mumon (1900-1988) decorate the oily-blue glaze of this hira-chawan enclosed in the original signed wooden box. Written upon the piece is Ki-Ho, Joy in the Law (of Buddha)followed by the Holy mans signature. A fine phrase for the tea room, with its roots in buddhist doctrine. The box is marked Taraku-Zo (made by Hara Taraku of Kyoto, a proponent of Kiyomizu Yaki). That is also impressed into the base, and can be seen in the fifth pho ...click for details
