Blues, greens, black and pink mingle in rivulets down the sides. A truly exceptional set. Each cup is roughly 3-1/4 inches (8 cm) diameter, the same height. Each is individually signed on the base. A signed image of a powerful Deity, its fierce expression mixed with sorrow, the combination that makes the best Noh masks so powerful. It measures 8-1/4 inches (21.1 cm) by 6-1/4 inches (16.5 cm). There is a repair to the color on the tip of his nose, otherwise is in fine condition. A truly splendid carving. The repair on the nose prevents us from putting the spledid price the mask deserves!

A very unusual suiban flower basin carved from a hollowed out Whale bone capped on the end with bone plugs and with 2 bone feet. Imagine what it must have been like 100 years ago to find a whale washed up on the beach, or a pile of whale bones. This monstrous creature one could not imagine. Certainly the bones like this would have been claimed by someone of high rank. This suiban is 44 inches (112 cm) long, 15 inches (29 cm) wide and roughly 6 inches (15 cm) tall. Judging by the rate of de ...click for details

Massive Bunraku puppets head of a wild warrior, judging by hair style possibly the character Benkei painted in the kabuki style. The eyes move right to left, up and down. Eyes and eyebrows, angle of head and mouth are all controlled by toggles on the neck. His hair is all horse-hair. As the head is spring loaded to the neck, we have not removed the head to look for a signature, but it is a most dramatic piece and certainly the star of our latest offering. This size is much larger than avera ...click for details

A pair of large Bunraku Kashira depicting the town ruffians or strong samurai. These would likely fall under the classification of Bunshichi and Kenbishi kashira heads. Included are one set of arms. The kashira are roughly 6-1/2 inches (16 cm) tall and, besides the loss of hair, in good solid condition. Both have losses to the gofun on their noses and some minor dirtiness to be expected of age. Although difficult to date, most likely later Edo to Meiji period, 19th century. A pair of heavy ...click for details
