This crushed and squeezed Tamba vase is covered in dark iron, speckled with licks of flame yellow. It is 8-1/2 inches (21.5 cm) tall and in excellent condition, enclosed in a kiri-wood box.

A small tokkuri has melted into the side of this large antique Chossen Karatsu Vase , a kiln miss-fire. Raw dark earth supplanted by rivulets of dark ame-yu glaze frosted above with crackled green tinged white. A very unusual piece, as ordinarily mistakes were destroyed. Was it done purposely or testament to the violence within the kiln, where 40 percent loss is standard? An example of rare chance or musakui no sakui, the aesthetic of intention of no intent; we will never know, however it cl ...click for details

A daunting image by radical Nihon Nanga-In member and founder of the Osaka Art College Yano Kyoson (1890-1965) dating from earlier in this influential artists career. Crisp white walls of a strangely elongated house perch on the edge of a dark forest reaching up to the rain washed sky. A single tree ripe with yellow leaves guards the entrance. The light color on silk image is bordered in lavender silk matching the leaden sky, extended with green cloth and features shimmering silvered-yellow c ...click for details

A lacquered wooden box decorated in built up Takamaki-e with Tsuba and Kozuka by Heian Zohiko dating from the first half of the 20th century. Inside is fine even nashiji. The decorations rise quite high off the surface, almost as if genuine tsuba were lying atop the box. One tsuba is in the shape of a Mokugyo, a Buddhist prayer drum of hollowed wood culminating in two dragons. The second is one of the seven lucky gods (shichi-fukujin) Daikoku seated in front of a rice bale, smoking a pipe an ...click for details

A signed silvered image of an uprooted iris by resident artist Muneyoshi of the Osaka Art Studio Shobido enclosed in the original signed wooden box. The razor thin blades of grass spread like a Buddhist halo behind the single open blossom. The delicate flower is roughly 11 inches (28 cm) long and in fine condition, signed on the bulb. For lack of a jun-gin stamp it is unclear whether it is silver plate or solid silver, and so we are pricing it as the later. It is likely the blades, bulb and ...click for details

An 18th century image of an Arhat (Rakan) with bulbous earlobes and long drooping eyebrows covered in the remnants of a vibrant coat of paint. Glass eyes stare out non-plussed at the area before his knees. Meant to be viewed from below, Rakan images were often placed high in eaves of Zen meditation rooms, to watch over the practitioners and provide examples of proper meditating positions (each Rakan sits in a unique position). This carving is made up of several pieces of wood joined and carv ...click for details

An intimate view into the daily life of old Japan by female artist Tanaka Gyokuen (b. 1912) enclosed in the original signed wooden box titled Yu-A-Bi. A beauty stands up from the steaming waters of a public bath house, safe in the segregated comfort of the steam, she wrings the tenugui across her back. Both sensual and yet without pretense, it is a scene the artist would have visited daily in the myriad backstreets of Kyotos neighborhood boroughs. The public bath was an important part of Kyot ...click for details
