A set of five antique Kenzan style plates decorated with Momiji maples on crackled cream colored glaze from Inuyama, outside Nagoya, enclosed in an antique wooden box. In the center of each dish is a character Sakigake in a green dial (Sakigake is the brightest star in the big dipper), meaning to excel above all others. They are 8 inches (19.5 cm) diameter and in fine condition. Very rare to find a complete set of dishes like this.

The Japanese Idea of wabisabi is presented here in this 19th century mizusashi fresh water container of creamy-white porcelain decorated with a rambling landscape punctuated by a loan scholar staring out over the seas. The raw, hard-wood lid is custom made to fit the slightly out of square form and the pot comes in a wooden box made from an old sugar crate. Really a pleasure to hold, the pot is 6-1/2 inches (16.5 cm) tall, roughly 5 inches (12.5 cm) square. There is a hairline crack extending ...click for details

A smattering of goma ash surrounds but is almost worn from the top of this ancient Bizen footed bowl. A pale gray is visible below the surface, as if looking through the outer red. The bowl is heavily worn outside from much handling, and was likely used on a daily basis. Certainly 17th century, very likely Momoyama, before styles and shapes became fixed under the rigid Edo structure, I have not seen another like it. Judging by the shape it is possibly a priests begging bowl, although unusual ...click for details
