A sweeping cobalt landscape by Okochi Yako (1893-1957) dominated by a cluster of gnarled trees has been dashed about the circumference of this large vessel by Yamasawa Shoko I. The landscape is punctuated by a Chinese style poem filling the void of a sea followed by the signature Yakojin-ga. Engraved into the base is the signature Dai Nippon Shoko Saku. A porcelain vase decorated with plums in fuki-e pink clouds by Miyagawa (Makuzu) Kozan enclosed in the original signed wooden box dating from the early 20th century. The vase is roughly 8-1/2 inches (22 cm) tall and in fine condition and retains the original rosewood base. There is some crazing in the glaze consistently about the foot, (not from impact) likely resulting from firing temperature or reduction time. Four grinning tigers support the flat body of this porcelain stand covered in white with lapping blue chevrons circling the sides. The tigers stand in the style of the Manjirushi, symbol of eternity. I have never seen another piece like it. The stand is roughly 8-1/2 inches (21.5 cm) square, 4 inches (10 cm) tall, dating from the 19th century.
