An unusual chato (tea room sword) made of heavy bone, perfect for whopping some unsuspecting robber on your way home from a night in Gion. Absolutely beautiful, ghostly white and heavy pierced with a red silk chord. It is 16-1/2 inches (42 cm) long and is in fine condition. It is said that these were produced from the mid to late Edo period, in lieu of swords for those not allowed to carry weapons (all but samurai). An unusual chato (tea room sword) in the shape of an octopus, its 8 legs stretched out in uniform with one curled back exposing the suckers. Eyes are intimated on one side, with an old chip where the breathing hole is opposite. About the neck is wrapped a faded silk chord. It is 22 inches (56 cm) long. A large gourd in the shape of a stone bound by silk chord and enclosed in a period custom made wooden box; the shape reminiscent of the stone used to block a garden path in the tea ceremony. A dark wooden bung shaped like clouds of smoke ries from the top, cinched tightly by the silk chord.
