An unusual chato (tea room sword) in the shape of a broken bamboo pole carved with poetry on one side and signed kansaiаŤĆ. Twigs form the rings for suspending the tie strings and the menuki. The simulated Kozuka (knife) can be removed to expose a double compartment for stamp ink and storage. Between the handle and the menuki is an inkwell, which would have contained cotton soaked with ink, and it is likely a brush would have been once contained in the scabbard. An unusual chato (tea room sword) in the shape of an octopus, its 8 legs stretched out in uniform with one curled back exposing the suckers. Eyes are intimated on one side, with an old chip where the breathing hole is opposite. About the neck is wrapped a faded silk chord. It is 22 inches (56 cm) long. It is said that these wooden swords were produced from the mid to late Edo period, in lieu of swords for those not allowed to carry weapons (all but samurai). A large gourd in the shape of a stone bound by silk chord and enclosed in a period custom made wooden box; the shape reminiscent of the stone used to block a garden path in the tea ceremony. A dark wooden bung shaped like clouds of smoke ries from the top, cinched tightly by the silk chord. A suzuri ink grinding stone, the basin sculpted from an ancient Kawara roof tile decorated with the remnants of painted vines. It is roughly 10 x 8 inches (25 x 20 cm). The roof tile is from the Nara to early Heian period. The cloth backing marks on the inside show this to be of Japanese origin.
