A beautifully crafted olive-bronze vase of unusual square design etched at the shoulder with silver frets under the circular rim. The vessel stands on four square feet, also an unusual feature. It is more than 12 inches (31 cm) tall and in fine condition, dating from the 19th century.

A tai, symbol of congratulations (for its name is a synonym for the word) swims through roaring waves on this exquisitely cast heavy bronze dish signed on the reverse and enclosed in a custom made kiri-wood box. The orange peel texture absorbs light, and focuses our attention on the glistening gold and shakudo inlayed eyes. Reluctance to draw his sword is won over by a firm sense of resolve evident in the conflicted expression; he strokes his beard with one hand, the sword of righteousness raised firmly in the other. A fine Takao image of Shoki the demon queller in dark bronze enclosed in a fine cedar wood box with fan shaped handle bearing the Takao family label within. A superb pair of hand-crafted articulated silver crabs clamber about an igneous rosewood burl carved with a crab and frogs signed Kakuho(›…•õ) set on a black lacquered wooden display stand. Each crab is intricately formed from silver with shakudo eyes, each joint of every leg and claw fully mobile. The shells are realistically patterned with hand formed indentations and textures. A thatched boat by the Shobido Art studios dated 1915 enclosed in the original kiri-wood box. Two silver hats are thrown haplessly on the roof. The hull is hand formed hammered bronze, each strike against the craftsman’s dolly visible in the rippling texture. The roof is removed to reaveal the incense tray below, also removable for ease of cleaning. The piece is 17 cm (7 inches) long and in fine condition.
