A large 19th century image of Amidha standing in a welcoming gesture on a tall base, lidded eyes and cherubic countenance bringing a sense of tranquility to his surroundings. An unusually large Buddhist prayer table gilded in genuine gold with a multilevel base carved with panoramic scenes enclosed in a period wooden box. The table rises from a rectangular base on curving legs to a diaper of pierced scrollwork. From there it reaches a plateau upon which rests the black lacquered table top lacquered with vine-work and featuring ornate scrolling ends. But the most unusual feature of this altar is the multilevel scene of wandering priests in a landscape of blossoming ...click for details

A carved wooden image of the emaciated Buddha seated in contemplation on a colored stone before a gold hoya. Lost in contemplation over the sadness in the world, he sits under the tree, head covered in snails that have crawled up to shade him. He is the embodiment of self denial. The image is 13 inches (33 c) tall including the base, the figure itself 7-1/2 inches (19 cm) tall. The image is unusual but consistent in style wtih the later Edo aesthetic.

An Edo period temple transom carving of roiling clouds carved from a single slab of Hinoki (cypress) darkened with a few centuries of age. Not too large, it is roughly 26 inches (66 cm) long, 8 inches (21 cm) deep and over 1 inch (3.5 cm) thick. This would be a brilliant shiki-ita for a tea room koro. This would have come from the very front of the temple, over the portcullis covering the stairs leading up into its gloomy incense blackened interior. (The Kozan Koro pictured is for scale and i ...click for details

Sold, Thank you!

A large Edo Mingei image of Amidha Buddha on a square base, the sublime countenance at once calming and elegant. The image was once gilded in gold, but has lost most of this over the centuries. It has also lost both feet and both hands. The Base is not original to the image, but was likely taken from an Ihai based on the shape. All of this is only testament to the great age of the piece. It is 18-1/2 inches (47 cm) tall.

Gray ink fades into the dark paper ground of this 17th century Buddhist Mandala style scroll signed Jukai Kyoshi Hitsu (written by Master Jukai). The enigmatic figures are brushed in a bold posture with speed and confidence, the cycle of constant brush dipping allowing a steadily repeating pattern of dry and wet strokes which somehow calls to light the cycle of life and all that entails in Buddhist doctrine. Quite angular at moments as the characters cant this way and that down the page, it is ...click for details
