A brass tea scoop dating from the later Edo period etched on the outer surface with flowers, and originaly lined with applied gold. The gold has largely worn away, leaving a shadow of color on the edges and center. Gold was originally used on tea utensils as it was believed that if it came in contact with poison the gold would change color, thus saving the participants from danger. This scoop is roughly 6-1/2 x 2-1/2 inches (16 x 6 cm) and is in fine condition. This is from a collection of s ...click for details

Four grinning tigers support the flat body of this porcelain stand covered in white with lapping blue chevrons circling the sides. The tigers stand in the style of the Manjirushi, symbol of eternity. I have never seen another piece like it. The stand is roughly 8-1/2 inches (21.5 cm) square, 4 inches (10 cm) tall, dating from the 19th century. Two of the beasts have lost an ear, and there is a crack in the neck of a third. Considering the intricacy and age I woud say that it is in remarkabl ...click for details

A fierce, Middle-Edo Period Kyogen Mask with brass ringed eyes enclosed in an antique black lacquered wooden box. The front is covered in burnished white gofun, with painted beard and moustache. The back is raw, age blackened wood. It is roughly 8-1/2 inches (21.5 cm) tall. There are some stable cracks in the gofun not at all surprising for the age, otherwise in fine condition..

A smattering of goma ash surrounds but is almost worn from the top of this ancient Bizen footed bowl. A pale gray is visible below the surface, as if looking through the outer red. The bowl is heavily worn outside from much handling, and was likely used on a daily basis. Certainly 17th century, very likely Momoyama, before styles and shapes became fixed under the rigid Edo structure, I have not seen another like it. Judging by the shape it is possibly a priests begging bowl, although unusual ...click for details

A stone frog, so realistic he looks wet, stands cagey on the edge of this antique Chinese stamp enclosed in a fine custom made Kiri-wood box from a Japanese collection of scholar items. The stamp is roughly 2-1/2 inches (6.5 cm) square, and in fine condition but for one small chip in the corner. Not our usual forte but the mug looking creature just called to me when I saw him. Truly a pleasure to hold. The stone is Juzan-seki (jap), Shoushan stone, and comes from Fujian province in China. I ...click for details
