A superb early 17th century Karatsu Chaire with a gold lined ivory lid wrapped in a silk bag enclosed in a black lacquered cylinder which is also wrapped in a silk bag and enclosed in a red lacquered wooden box tied with lavender silk chord. The Chaire is 2-3/4 inches (7 cm) tall, roughly the same diameter. The black lacquer cylinder has a crack in the lacquer within. Otherwise all is in fine condition.

A large and unusual Raku hand warmer (Shuro) in the shape of a monkey Charm (sarubobo) by representative Kyoto artist Kiyomizu Rokube IV (Rokuko, 1847-1920) dating circa 1920 enclosed in the original signed wooden box. The Sarubobo is a Mingei Monkey Charm from the Gifu area, here recreated in the low-fired Raku pottery tradition of Kyoto and seated on the original silk pillow. Heavily textured ash clings to the surface of this excavated Kamakura period Japanese bowl. A kiln flaw, it was likely discarded, only to be found some centuries later. One side has been re-attached, and two kiln flaws filled. Although possibly late Heian, it is certainly from the early Kamakura, and we are dating it thus (12th -13th century). 11-1/2 x 12-1/2 x 4 inches (29 x 32 x 10 cm) and comes in a fine modern kiri-wood box.

A classical shape for the sencha tea room by Ito Tozan I enclosed in the original signed wooden box titled Hyo-gata Kake Kabin. The gourd form is molded from rough sandy clay and covered in ame-iro glaze reminiscent of Ohii-yaki. It is 17 inches (43 cm) long and in fine condition. The box has been chewed on in one corner by a mouse, and the wood has much darkened with age.

A single undulating line forms waves on the neck of this handled Iga pot dating from the 17th century. Green ash glaze covers the upper front, leaving a smattering of ash and raw clay visible over the body, the occasional shiseki stone bursting from the surface. The Tsubo is 8 inches (20.5 cm) tall, roughly 6 inches (16 cm) diameter. There are of course small old nicks but no major damage or repairs. This is a superb example of Ko-Iga pottery...

A bakumatsu era (mid 19th century) Shishi Koro of dark red clay covered in a rich green glaze from the Banko kilns in Mie. It is 14 x 24 x 8 cm (9 x 5-1/2 x 3 inches) and is in fine condition but for one clawed toe which has been chipped. This squat style of facial expression was popular from the declining years of the Edo period into the early Meiji, and fits the date of this piece perfectly.

Kusunoki Masashige rests between battles in front of a cloth draped with his family crest on the side of this unusual baluster form vase from the Banko kilns. The imagery is performed simply in dark lines and bright gold on the raw clay. A fine Tetsu-yu Chaire in rich red clay from the Niwa-yaki kinlns of Zeze in Otsu, first and last stop on the Old Tokaido from Kyoto. It has a zogei lid and comes wrapped in a silk bag, enclosed in a black lacquered wooden container. It is 3 inches (7.5 cm) tall, 2 inches (5 cm) diameter and in fine condition, the raw clay on the base worn to a beautiful sheen. Due to age the outer wrapping of silk on the bag containing the piece has partially disintegrated.
