The Kura - Japanese Art Treasures
As many may know we at The Kura have been heavily involved in the relief effort in Tohoku following the 2011, March 11 Earthquake and Tsunami which killed at least 26,000 people, and left hundreds of thousands homeless. During this last year we have neglected the website, and inconvenienced many with delays in service. Please know it was not without good reason, and your patience and understanding through this difficult time for Japan has been very much appreciated. For more on our efforts please see http://www.idrojapan.org
After this first year anniversary we are now looking forward to getting back to the business of collection building, and look forward to working with you again in 2012. Sincerely: Robert Mangold Owner, The Kura - Director, International Disaster Relief Organization Japan
Robert Mangold has been working with Japanese antiques since 1995 with an emphasis on ceramics, Paintings, Armour and Buddhist furniture.

Tasteful Gold design under Shunkei Nuri with black lacquer rim defines for us the meiji aesthetic of superb quality and elegance with an emphasis on nature. 31.5 cm (12-1/2 inches) diameter, 24.5 cm (10 inches) tall, there are minor chips in rim. Austere and subtle indicative of later Meiji work. It will be shipped without ash.

A very unusual lacquer box with the built up scene of a Chinese pavilion covering all sides. The box itself is black lacquered on the base, with red sides revealing the imagery in deep layers, the top gold. Very unusual, I have never seen anything quite like it. It measures 17 x 17.5 x 8.5 cm (6-1/2 x 7 x 3-1/2 inches) and comes in a period wooden box...

A black lacquered pot in the shape of a sake taru (cask) decorated with maki-e of a sake cup and leaves. This is not a decorative item but actually functions, the sake able to pour from the spout on the left side of the handle. How it is able to pour through such a narrow piece of wood is an amazing piece of construction. Very unusual. It measures 22.5 x 16 x 34 cm (9 x 6-1/2 x 13-1/2 inches) and is in fine condition...

Temples and lush hills of gold decorate the black lacquered sides of this 19th century go-board. Each scene is unique, a lakeside garden, the shore dotted with pines, the stilted legs of a mountain temple rising out of the mist, a river rushing past the long gate, the temple roof visible over the hill, The legs are sculpted and decorated with maple leaves washing away in swirling water, and beneath can be found the crest of the Ii clan, Daimyo (warlords) of Hikone...

An early Edo period Negoro tray, likely for service of sweets or for offerings at a temple. It is 19 cm (7-1/2 inches) diameter, 7 cm (3 inches) tall. Some losses and chips only serve to enhance the great sense of age.
