Villains and travelers, Goblins and Priests, Various tales play out in 3 dimensions around the trunk and among the leafy branches of a massive tree forming the core and backdrop of this amazing 19th century altar bell stand. The piece is 6 inches (15.5 cm) tall, the same diameter. It comes enclosed in an old wooden box. This matches the Maezukue Altar table previously listed. One of the most elaborate I have ever seen.

A very elaborate altar table with poly-chromed and gilded diorama of sages traveling in a mythical forested landscape. 19th century. 66 x 18 x 24 cm (26 x 7 x 9-1/2 inches) enclosed in an age darkened custom wood box. A serene expression emenates from this late Edo period Standing Amiddha Bosatsu figure complete with original gilded wood base. Much incense soot encrustation acquired over time. A Bakumatsu era (mid 19th century) sculpture of the bearded Daruma, patriarch of Zen Buddhism, standing resolute with robes clasped in front. The detail is fine, with a curly beard and large rings hanging from his lobes. It is 65 cm (25 inches) tall, and in fine condition, weighing 8.5 kg (roughly 17 pounds). There is a filled hole in the base where it was once attached to a stand.

A deer image representing the Shinto god of Kasuga Shrine carrying a silver mirror dating from the Eiroku period (Momoyama era, 1557-1570) enclosed in a wooden box. The image is roughly 18 x 8 x 22 cm (7 x 3 x 9 inches). There are some cracks in the shrine gate atop his back and some old repairs. A small stand made to hold a Buddhist image dated the 12th month of the first year of Ansei (1854). The top is a rich red, the sides black with inset plates of gold decorated with engraved brass hardware. It is 12-1/2 x 5-1/2 x 2-3/4 inches (31.5 x 14 x 7 cm) and is in fine condition considering age.

An Edo period figure of Amidha Nyorai standing in the Vitarka mudrā, the gesture of transmission of Buddhist teaching. It is 2 feet (61 cm) tall with the base, the image alone 14-1/2 inches (36.5 cm) tall. Overall it is in very nice condition. Likely 18th century, some restoration has been performed over time. The robes of the image have been re-gilded and likely the face and hands re-lacquered at some point, however current wear does show some age since then...
