Antique Chestnut Mingei Tray with Copper Staple Repairs Japanese, Edo, Meiji MOR5139 This tray, which likely started life round, has slowly changed shape, shrinking against the grain to form an oblong. A crack in one side has been repaired with beautiful round copper staples, adding a new dimension to the ancient piece of wood. On the base is a yaki-in brand from the original maker or owner.

A pluck little bird clings delicately to the wispy upper reaches of a blossoming cherry in this lovely scroll signed Kakutei. It measures 22 by 75 inches (56 x 191 cm) and has been freshly mounted in fine blue-gray silk with dark wood rollers. The only person listed we have found in this period to have used the name Kakutai is the Shijo artist Morikawa Sobun (1847-1902). Obviously by an artist of great talent, we have not been able to find a copy of his signature used with this name...
