A large Edo period image of thea seated priest Shinran Shonin in polychromed robes, his glass eyes half lidded, staring silently down in meditation. It is roughly 2 feet (60 cm) tall, 15 inches wide and in good original condition. 18th to 19th century made in the yosegi style of multiple pieces of wood, there is some separation over the right arm, and loss to the polychrome on his brightly colored Kesa. Shochikubai, young pine, blossoming plum and sasa bamboo decorate this 18th century lacquer box adorned with the Honda family crest and a derivative of the Mitsuba-aoi hollyhock of the shogun. A rare long, high-walled Te-tsuki Oribe basin with an unusual braided handle dating from the mid Edo period. An anonymous pine forest on gold screen dating from the later Meiji in a pale silk border with black lacquered wooden frame. It is 68-1/2 x 143-1/2 inches (174 x 364 cm). Overall a very nice presentation in fine condition, there is some loss of pigment, fading and surface abrasions attesting to age. A woman stands wrapped in a kimono, aloof , her gentle curves inviting yet the fan in her hand, showing the image of a skull, warns of danger. It is by Takeuchi Seiho (1864-1942) signed using the original character for his name and thus dating it from between 1885 and 1900. A very unusual scene by the artist, certainly showing that he was already deeply rooted stylistically before going to Europe. A set of crackle glazed cups from Seifu Yohei decorated with a simple line by the 90 year old Tanomura Chokunyu enclosed in the original signed wooden box. These appear to have been made in celebration of his 90th birthday in 1904. On the side is written 90 okina Chokunyu Dojin Sen (written by the 90 year old man of The Way Chokunyu) and each is stamped on the base Seifu.
