Robert has been working with disaster relief group IDRO Japan in the earthquake affected areas of Kumamoto, and this has caused some delays in listing, messaging and shipping. A very rare 19th century elaborate head dress (Kanmuri or crown) of gilded parts inset with glass surmounted by a phoenix flanked by two dragons for use in the Japanese Noh Theater. A golden phoenix takes flight from the peak, surrounded by sun, moon and flaming jewel from which are suspended extravagant chains of glass and coral beads and gilded ornaments. A long bronze boat with removable thatched roof revealing a compartment for burning incense. One can imagine the sage within, burning twigs to heat his tea, smoke escaping the roof as he contemplates the empty moon. A large bronze water basin in the shape of a lotus leaf supported by three “Renkon” lotus root feet and upon which play frogs. Dating from the 19th century, it has acquired a lovely patina over the last century, of soft greens on richly burnished olive, and unusually, the veins are highlighted in reddish brown. It is 15 inches (38 cm) diameter, 11-1/2 inches (29 cm) tall and in fine condition.

A bowl made up entirely of a natural growth of mushrooms dried and darkened with age enclosed in a custom made wooden box titled Zuishibabon and annotated by Scholar/artist Yamanaka Shintenno. It is 26 x 22 x 7 cm (10-1/2 x 9 x 3 inches). The inside of the box lid is dated the Second Month of Meiji 9 (1876) and signed Shintenno. A pottery incense burner from Hagi of highly textured clay in the shape of a Chrysanthemum surmounted with a Buddhist jewel. Inside the box lid is written Ko-Hagi Kikubana Koro followed by the sizes and an attribution to the second Koraizaemon (1617-1668) by the 11th generation head of the family (1912-1981). The koro is just less than 8 inches (20 cm) diameter, 7 inches (18 cm) tall. There are a few old repairs as visible in the close-up photos...

Iris in dark iron decorate the crackled pale glaze of this Edo period platter featuring striking gold repairs and enclosed in a custom made period wooden box of thick kiri wood titled E-Seto Sara. The quality of the gold and repairs is singular in execution. That of a very skilled craftsman. The gold shimmers softly in tiny chips and dings around the rim, and in one corner a dollop of Oribe Green grows like moss on the rim, a hint of spring in the air. The dish is 9-1/4 (23.5 cm) square.

A large set of porcelain shrine guardians in the form of Inari on pedestals decorated with over-glaze enamels and gold. Inari, the magical fox holds one paw over a burning jewel, and each clutches a precious object in its mouth. They are roughly 4 x 6-1/2 x 13-1/2 inches (34 x 17 x 10 cm). There is a hairline crack in one on the back shoulder and up the back of one base. These do not affect the integrity of the pieces.

A small house shaped incense burner by Mashimizu Zoroku enclosed in the original signed wooden box titled Kuzuya Koro. Inside the roof is visible cloth patterns where it was formed over wet sack-cloth. The outside has been scraped with a comb to resemble thatch. Inside a window a scholar gazes out, perhaps expecting a guest, or just contemplating the seasonal changes from the warmth of his abode. A root-carving of bamboo in the form of a dragon head with a hollowed center to be used as a Mokugyo prayer bell. Making use of the natural undulations in the bamboo nodules the artist has created a fierce form. Eyes bulging, whiskers drifting alongside, it is every bit the defender of Buddhist law. A ceramic cover for a tea room brazier in the shape of a devil dressed in priests robes dated and annotated within. Dating from the Ansei era, inside it is annotated by Daiko Sogen (1772-1860), 435th head of Daitokuji. Well known for his poetry and mastery of the Tea Ceremony, he taught Zen to Eiraku Hozen, and was compatriot to Gengensai. It is 34.5 x 34.5 x 30 cm (13-1/2 x 13-1/2 x 12 inches) and is in fine condition.

A black Raku fluted bowl stampd on base with a copper insert and copper lid in shape of a court cap pierced with smoke tendrils enclosed in an age darkened wooden box titled simply Kamuri Gata Koro (Hat Shaped Incense Burner). The seal on the base appears to be that of the 9th generation Raku master, Ryonyu 1756–1834. The koro is 5-1/2 x 4-1/2 x 8 inches (13.5 x 11 x 19 cm) and is in excellent condition. The “ears” are 14 inches (36 cm) across).

A very unusual image of Daikoku, one of the seven lucky gods whose raised mallet hammers out gold coins carrying a sack of treasure on bails of rice, signed and dated Genroku 12 (1699).
