Robert has been working with disaster relief group IDRO Japan in the earthquake affected areas of Kumamoto, and this has caused some delays in listing, messaging and shipping. A Paper box (Fubako) and writing box (Suzuri Bako) of raw kiri-wood hand painted by Tanaka Hakuin and enclosed in the original red-lacquered wooden storage box signed and dated Taisho 8 (1919). Inset into the interior of the writing box is a suzuri ink stone and suiteki water dropper. Also included is a hand painted fan and scroll by the artist. A Ryoro Sencha Steeped Tea Brazier by Seifu Yohei II complete with the original very rare near perfect condition bisque fired liner surmounted with a ring of swirling clouds, a pheasant, carp and Tiger. Outside it is decorated with blossoming trees and plants in the literati style and signed on the base. A very unusual Katana held in a saya (scabbard) made to look like a gnarled branch cut into a poor man’s cane. When pulled a spring-loaded mechanism releases two iron flanges creating a very effective tsuba hand guard. The blade is unsigned, measuring Nishaku nissun nibu {26-1/2 inches (67.3 cm)}. Soft crackled glaze stained lightly from use around the rim drapes over the raw clay form which shows tellingly the hands of the virtuoso who created it, Otagaki Rengetsu. Scratched into the side is a bucolic poem of Autumn:

A breathtaking Taisho period image of the Buddha in meditation by Takayama Shunryo. It is performed with gold appliqué and brilliant mineral pigments on silk, mounted in a fine mounting of blue cloth ending in bone rollers and enclosed in a kiri-wood box. A Teapot by Teishitsu Gigei-In Suwa Sozan I decorated by his friend the famous scholar artist Tomioka Tessai and enclosed in a signed double wood box. A custom pad between the pot and lid protect it during storage from chipping, and it has a silk bag in which it is wrapped. . It is 4-1/2 x 7-1/2 x 6 inches (11 x 19 x 15 cm) and in excellent condition. The box is titled Daibutsu Sozan – Chossen – Suichu and signed Hachiju Okina Kyuso Tessai Dai, Sozan Yakisei.

A celadon incense burner in the shape of a kabuto samurai helmet on an armor box by the first generation Suwa Sozan wrapped in the original stamped cloth and enclosed in a wooden box. Flying yellow clings around the sides and underlies the vitrified yellow ash which runs down the front of this unusual open Kame shape from the early to mid Edo period kilns of Echizen. An exquisite minimalist set of Ten Porcelain tea cups with lacquered wooden covers and saucers made by the Zohiko studio of Kyoto and enclosed in the original compartmentalized signed wooden box.
