A spectacular find, a 17th century (early Edo period) Hagi Water Bowl decorated with a Christian Cross called a Hana-kurusu Moyo Mizusashi. A similar piece is published in the book Nanban Bijutsu (Japanese, 1967 color block 33 as well as figure 8 p 137). The basin is 8 x 6-1/2 x 4-1/2 inches (20 x 16.5 x 11.5 cm). There is a crack in one end (see close-up photos). I believe this would have been used to hold holy water in the Christian Temple.
