Puppies frolic in the snow on this early two panel screen by Nishimura Goun. Dabbed in light color allowing the paper itself to be the enveloping snow, the screen shows the mastery of design and brush effects for which he would become famed. Yet the style strongly reflects that of his teacher, Takeuchi Seiho, placing this very early in the artists oeuvre, likely later Meiji, between 1900 and 1910...

Remnants of yellow glaze covers this Heishi (Heiji) bottle form from the Owari-Seto area engraved clearly about the neck with three lines. A quintessential Kamakura pot. There is much degradation to the glaze typical of Seto which has withstood a millennium of earthquake, fire, war and abuse. That anything survives so long in Japan is miraculous. It is 9-1/2 inches (24 cm) tall, 6-1/2 inches (16.5 cm) diameter and comes wrapped in old cloth in an old wooden box.

Gold crowns this lovely Edo period Black Satsuma container wrapped in orange crepe silk and enclosed in an age darkened wooden box. It is plugged with a wooden bung, and has a black line of lacquer also swirling up the body where it has been repaired some very long time ago. Perhaps it was a furidashi and once contained the crystallized sugar candies “Konpeito” so popular in old Japan. Or could it have been some medicine? An intriguing piece of antique pottery, 5 inches (13.5 cm) tall.
