Robert has been working with disaster relief group IDRO Japan in the earthquake affected areas of Kumamoto, and this has caused some delays in listing, messaging and shipping. The ghostly form of a ram appears as if in the mountain mist on this mocha-shaped kogo incense case by Suwa Sozan I enclosed in the original signed wooden box. It is 3 inches (8.5 cm) diameter and in excellent condition.
Sozan I (1852-1922) was born in Kutani country, present day Ishikawa prefecture, where he initially studied before moving to Tokyo in 1875. Over the next 25 years he would gravitate between Tokyo and Kanazawa, working at various kilns and research facilities...

A set of two beautifully crafted Tokkuri dating from the 19th century enclosed in a period wooden box titled Mishima Tokkuri. A lovely poem in brisk thin strokes decorates this crackle-glazed vase by Otagaki Rengetsu enclosed in a rare signed wooden box. The poem reads:
Ooigawa kishi no (On the banks of the O-i River)
igui ni musebu nari (stakes dusted in snow)
yama no arashi no sue no shiranami (White-water follows the mountain storm)
The vase is 21 cm (8-1/2 inches) tall, 9 cm diameter and in fine condition.

Antique Surimono Envelopes Woodblock printed w/ Geisha Japanese, ephemera, sosaku, hanga AOR5415 A set of 9 sosaku hanga envelopes printed with Geisha. Each is 6.5 x 15.5 cm (2-1/2 x 6 inches). Besides toning, they are in fine condition. On the envelope is imprinted Kyoto Kyogoku OOrai-Ya Han (printed by OOrai of Kyoto Kyogoku).
